DUHAMEL DE MONCEAU, [Henri Louis] [1700-1782].
Traité Des Arbres Et Arbustes Qui Se Cultivent En France En Pleine Terre.
Paris: H.L.Guerin L.F.Delatour, 1755.
2 Volumes. 4to. pp. 2 p.l., lxii, 368 [i.e. 370: cancellans, numbered *179-180 bound in after errata]; 2 p.l., 387. with half-titles. 250 woodcut plates & 4 folding engraved plates. numerous engraved headpieces. woodcut tailpieces & title vignettes. contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, corners renewed. First Edition. Duhamel de Monceau, polymath and member of the Académie des Sciences, is best known for his contributions to the literature of agronomy and arboriculture. Much of his knowledge in these areas derived from practical experience gained on his estates at Vrigny and Monceau and on his brother's at Denainvilliers. This, his second publication, describes more than a thousand trees in alphabetical order, following Tournefort's classification and nomenclature. Of the 250 woodcut plates, 154 are printed from the blocks made in the sixteenth century by Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Mayerpeck for the large illustrations to Mattioli's herbal. "These designs by Liberale and Meyerpeck, delicately cut, are among the most outstanding examples of woodcut botanical illustration, filling the full area of the large blocks, on which they might have been drawn directly." (Raphael) Some incorporate slight alterations made by Duhamel de Monceau. The remaining woodcuts illustrate plants unknown to Mattioli and are of lesser quality; they include depictions of the Magnolia grandiflora, the tulip tree, several maples, and others from North America. The folding engraved plates illustrate charcoal burning, olive presses, soap boiling, and furnaces used to make pitch, directions for which are also included in the text. N.Ozanne [1728-1811) was responsible for the elegant engraved vignettes, all but one of which depict detailed dissections of flowers or fruits. Hunt 552. Nissen BBI 547. Pritzel 2466. Raphael, Silva, 2. Stafleu TL2 1544.

Originally published in 1768 in two quarto volumes. The plates are reduced versions of the originals after Aubriet, Le Berriays and Basseporte.
